The list of new models nominated for the 2016 World Car Awards (WCA) have been announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It's the first shortlist before the final category winners are announced at the 2016 New York Show.
The provisional list shows a strong performance from German and Japanese car brands, but a number of British and American models commended. Notable models include the new Audi A4, Mercedes GLC, Mazda MX-5 and Honda HR-V.
Thanks to cars such as the new Jaguar XE and XF, the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Vauxhall Astra, Britain in its strongest position ever to pick up at least one category win in what is officially ranked as the largest automotive awards programme on the planet.
Subaru did well with two WCOTY nominations for the Levorg and Outback, while Ssangyong's new Tivoli also caught the judges eyes. To qualify as a WCA contender a car must be all-new and available for sale on at least two continents by mid-2016.
Seventy-plus jurors (including Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler and WCA Director Mike Rutherford) from dozens of countries will cast their votes over the coming months, with the winners and the World Car of the Year announced at the New York Motor Show in late March, 2016.
