Mercedes' SUV range revamp is in full swing, and the final model to get the name change has leaked online ahead of its official reveal. The Mercedes GLS will replace the GL-Class as the largest model in the range, and gets comprehensive styling and engine changes to celebrate.
These images were leaked onto French automotive forum Worldscoop and taken from an official Mercedes brochure. They show what is essentially a reskinned GL, with styling upgrades including a more aggressive front grille design, tweaked lights front and rear and reprofiled bumpers.
Although official details have yet to be released, we can expect similar updates to what's found on the ML-based GLE. That means more upmarket interior trim and a floating tablet-style infotainment system, although the basic seven-seat cabin layout isn't expected to change.
What will change is the engine range. The GL350d V6 diesel will probably get a boost in fuel economy and a reduction in CO2 emissions, while power should also increase to 254bhp. The 6.2-litre V8 in the hot AMG version is expected to remain unchanged other than some minor efficiency tweaks.
It's very likely the GLS will eventually receive the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the GLE 500e. In that guise it produces 346bhp and 650Nm of torque, but don't expect quite the same performance as the GL-CLass weighs currently 2.7 tonnes and the new GLS will be in the same ballpark. We'll have full details on Merc's new flagship SUV soon.
