Fiat has revealed an all-new pick-up truck, named the Fullback, at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show. It will rival the likes of the Toyota Hilux and upcoming Nissan Navara NP300.
The Fullback is essentially a rebadged Mitsubishi L200, which is immediately clear from the pickup’s pointed headlights, curved windows and the crease running along the load bed. It can be fitted with either a 150bhp or 180bhp 2.4-litre diesel engine and comes with four-wheel drive as standard. Like the L200, the Fullback cab can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic gearbox.
Available as a double cab only, the Fullback can carry a payload of up to 1,045kg – just 5kg short of the class-leading L200 it’s based on.
If you were wondering about the name, Fiat says ‘Fullback’ comes from the “cornerstone position in rugby and American football”, to add some brutish appeal.
The Fullback is Fiat’s first foray into the modern mid-size commercial pick-up market in Europe, with the brand only manufacturing the smaller Fiat Strada for Latin America.
The Fullback pickup will come to the UK, with a rough release date of autumn 2016. Prices are unconfirmed, but we expect them to start from around £23,000 – a similar price to the L200. Two trim levels will be available.
