The annual CES show in Las Vegas is being treated with ever increasing importance by the world’s car brands as technology plays an ever-increasing role in our new cars. Without doubt, CES 2015 saw another huge growth in automotive interest and it’s expected that the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show will bring cars even closer to its heart when it opens its doors on January 6th 2016.

What happened at CES 2015?
In case you’ve forgotten CES 2015 saw a whole host of new car technology reveals. BMW demonstrated its new autonomous parking technology and the German car maker also previewed gesture control tech that later featured in the new 7-Series. Mercedes Benz showcased the space-aged F015 Concept car. Labelled ‘Luxury In Motion’ the electrically-powered silver ‘cocoon’ featured a lounge-like interior of state-of-the-art touchscreen wall displays and highly impractical white leather.
Ford, meanwhile, announced a ‘smart mobility plan’ to take the traditional car manufacturer into the future, by means of a global multimodal transportation business strategy, as well as showcasing third-phase developments on its SYNC in-car connectivity system.
General Motors introduced additional services to its subscription-based Onstar system, Jaguar Land Rover’s Urban Windscreen and Ghost car combo joined the augmented reality bandwagon and Audi brought “Jack”, The car maker’s self-piloted A7 came over 500 miles from San Francisco almost all by himself.
So what does CES 2016 look set to bring?
The hottest tip is the launch of the 'Apple car'. Speculatively, the new EV brand called Faraday Future is launching a vehicle offering “smart and seamless connectivity to the outside world” to compete with Tesla Motors. Though only time will tell. What we do know is that more traditional manufacturers will be bringing their tech A-game.
Ford is expected to announce a partnership with Google to combine efforts to reach autonomy sooner. Intel and Jaguar Land Rover, by way of the sporty F-Pace, continue their collaborative efforts in refining the in-car driver assist and health features.
BMW is set to do away with mirrors, showcasing new heads-up displays in the i8 Spyder, as well as bringing a clearer picture of the German maker’s product positioning within the IoT (Internet of Things). Volkswagen will distract attentions away from the recent #dieselgate chatter with developments in its autonomous driving programme. The Golf R Touch will host a medley of cabin gadgets and park itself. On a similar note, Audi will be keeping the conversation connected to infotainment, displays and lighting technologies.
We’re expecting wellness, affordability, scalability and cyber security to be the big topics for 2016 with developments in cameras, sensors and processing technologies to enhance our future daily drives.
Harman will be announcing plans around scalable, future-proof hardware and software solutions. Further refinement of audio systems, in light of its new partnership with DIRAC, will enhance the digital audio experience on a platform set to “shatter the boundaries” of what was considered possible. Clarion will be rolling out the FDS digital loudspeakers announced at Frankfurt and Thinkware will be bringing new products and improved technologies to its dash cam range. Garmin will announce a revised product range and despite Pioneer claiming DAB/internet hybrid radio is the way forward, DAB radio buffs at PURE will be showcasing new products for 2016.
