A convertible BMW i8 Spyder concept will go on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2016, and a production model is likely to follow.
We've already seen a concept version of the i8 Spyder - it was revealed at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, two years before the i8 coupe even went on sale. We expect that the CES concept will be rather different, with a three-year gap giving plenty of scope for improvement.
As CES is an electronics event rather than an all-out car show, expect to see a focus on the i8 Spyder's in-car technology. The petrol-electric hybrid powertrain from the current car is hi-tech enough, but we'll also see new connectivity options and safety equipment.
Similarly, the interior of the i8 Spyder concept should get a redesign to accomodate - and show off - the new tech.
When the Spyder version launches, it could also bring with it a facelift for the coupe, plus powertrain upgrades for more range and power. BMW is also looking into a more hardcore version of the i8, as well as a more eco-friendly hyrdrogen car.
