The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been updated with a couple of new top-spec trim levels, called GX5h and GX5hs, available in January and starting from £38,399 and £40,499 respectively (including the government grant).

Both trims get a high-end audio system, heated rear seats, leather seats in a choice of colours and LED lighting. Also standard on both models are 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, auto lights and wipers and front and rear fog lamps.

On the inside you'll find a DAB radio, dual-zone climate control, an electric sunroof, an auto-dimming main mirror, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera display, sat-nav and Bluetooth, USB, SD card and iPod connectivity.

In terms of safety kit, there's seven airbags, braking assist, hill start assist, ISOFIX mountings and city crash prevention as standard on both cars. The more expensive GX5hs model gets a forward collision detection system, lane departure warning and an unintended acceleration mitigation system as standard, too.

A metallic or pearlescent paint finish is optional on both trims, but the GX5hs also gets front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control, compared to the optional rear sensors and normal cruise control on the GX5h model.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a plug-in hybrid SUV that uses an electric motor and a petrol engine for an impressive official economy of 156.9mpg and emissions of 42g/km of CO2. It was face lifted earlier this year, with some styling tweaks and interior improvements over the previous model.

It's the best-selling model in the Outlander range, with 10,000 out of 12,000 Outlanders sold in 2014 being the PHEV version.
