Drivers paying the least for car insurance in Britain can be found in Dumfries, Scotland, where the average policy sets owners back just £265, Auto Express can exclusively reveal.
Figures supplied by Moneysupermarket broke down average annual premiums in the third quarter of 2015 for all British area codes. Three of the five cheapest premiums were found north of the border, with drivers in Perth and Kirkcaldy paying £267 and £283 respectively on average. Surprisingly, Dorchester and Exeter were the only two areas in England with average premiums below £300 – with the rest of the nine sub-£300 premiums found in Scotland and Wales.
• Cheapest cars to insure right now
Predictably, the highest premiums were quoted for drivers living in and around the capital, where policies can easily cost twice the national average of £440. The most expensive insurance policies are found in East London, with motorists asked to pay £870 on average to drive legally.
However, just because you live in a big town doesn’t mean you’ll have to fork out more for car insurance. Drivers in Edinburgh – the eighth most populated city in Britain – are offered some of the cheapest policies in the country, paying on average £310. And 42 miles west in Glasgow – the fourth most populated city – average premiums are £40 below the national average.
• Tips for a young driver to get cheaper car insurance
Ben Howarth, policy adviser for Motor & Liability at the Association of British Insurers, said: “Insurers consider a number of factors when determining insurance premiums.
“These include an individual’s driving history, the level of vehicle crime, traffic volumes, average traffic speeds and the level of known fraud within someone’s postcode.”
