All you need to know about the Beijing Motor Show 2016, including the latest news and all the cars at the show

The Beijing Motor Show is held once every two years in the Chinese capital, and is becoming one of the most prominent motor shows on the planet. Manufacturers from around the world are keen to get a grip of the ever-expanding Chinese car market and the Beijing Motor Show, along with its alternating sister event, the Shanghai Motor Show, is increasingly seen as the place to do it.

Most of the cars displayed at the 2016 show will specifically target China, and won't ever go on sale here in the UK - but a handful of models that we will get are making their debuts. Expect exciting new cars from Renault, Porsche and Audi, among others, to appear on the show stands.

Of course Chinese brands like Geely, BAIC, Dongfeng and Chery will all be making waves at the show, and while their cars aren't of much importance to UK buyers just yet, there's always the chance that these huge companies will spread their wings into Europe in the future. We're also expecting plenty of China-only metal from more familiar brands including a plug-in Ford C-MAX and a long-wheelbase Mercedes E-Class, neither of which will see UK roads any time soon.

Beijing Motor Show 2016: the key cars

Audi

Audi is preparing a hot TT RS sports car, and with a release date scheduled for later on in 2016 we expect the new model to make its debut at a motor show very soon - making the Beijing show is a likely candidate. We expect the car will get nearly 400bhp from its five-cylinder turbocharged engine, and as our spy shots show the usual design touches on the RS will include oval exhausts, bigger brakes and larger air vents on the front.

Chery

The Chery FV2030 might not have a particularly catchy name, but this electric crossover concept is certainly eye-catching. The coupe-like looks and sporty stance are all we really know about the car for now, but expect to learn more about the concept when it arrives on the show stands.

Infiniti

Infiniti is set to reveal a new concept car in Beijing, with the first teaser image suggesting that it will preview a new SUV for the brand, possibly to replace the QX50 in the range. Infiniti Design Director Alfonso Albaisa said that the concept "demonstrates how Infiniti can offer something new and exciting with future QX SUV models".

Mazda

The Mazda CX-4 is on the way, a new coupe-crossover for the Chinese market. It sits on the same platform as the CX-5 SUV, but offers style-concious buyers something with a sleeker profile and a sportier stance. The car is China-only for now, but R&D boss Kenichiro Saruwatari did tell us that a European launch hasn't been ruled out completely.

Porsche

We've already tried the 718 Boxster, but its hard-top brother the 718 Cayman is still to arrive - and we expect to see the car in the metal for the first time at the Beijing Motor Show. Like the Boxster it will get 4-cylinder power to replace the previous six-cylinder unit, but is still likely to be the fastest Cayman yet.

Renault

Renault is planning a larger SUV model, likely called Maxthon, to go into production later on in 2016. It's set to be built in China, so it would make sense for it to appear at the Beijing Motor Show this year. We've seen spy shots of the car, but details are limited so far. We do know that it's based on the same platform as the Nissan X-Trail seven-seater, but will only have five seats itself.

Volkswagen

We've already seen the VW Phideon at the Geneva Motor Show, but as a China-only car we expect to see the car at the Beijing show as well, possibly showing off the interior which we haven't seen yet. As a large, luxury flagship saloon, the car is likely to be built around the passengers rather than the driver, as it will mostly be used to chauffeur VIPs around.
