BMW has announced a new quad-turbo 3.0-litre diesel engine will be introduced to the BMW 7 Series range, badged as the 750d xDrive. BMW made the announcement at 7th International Vienna Motor Symposium.
The new engine features two low-pressure and two high-pressure turbochargers, which BMW says help the new unit develop 394bhp and 760Nm of torque. That's more power than the old tri-turbo diesel engine but BMW claims that it is five per cent more fuel efficient.
Paired with the tried and tested eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, BMW claims the 750d xDrive can get from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 155mph. It is believed the engine can develop more torque but the gearbox is at its limit in terms of what it can handle.
The use of four turbos means, in theory, the 3.0-litre diesel will have strong low down response thanks to the two low-pressure turbos but also impressive high-end power. It's likely the engine will go on to feature in range-topping version of the new BMW 5 Series due in 2017.
