New Match Edition specification for Golf Estate, plus revisions to Golf R, Passat, Polo, and Touran ranges too

Volkswagen has announced a plethora of updates across its range, including new specifications, engine upgrades and cost savings. The most comprehensive of these is the addition of a new trim level to the Golf Estate line-up – named Match Edition.

As with the regular Golf, Match Edition replaces the SE trim level, and adds some desirable extra kit without raising the price tag. Additions include 16-inch ‘Dover’ alloy wheels, front foglights, electric door mirrors with puddle lights on the underside and rear parking sensors.

Inside, the infotainment system has been upgraded to the Discover Navigation unit, fitted with a 6.5-inch screen. This adds smart features like points-of-interest, speed limit display and dynamic live traffic updates, and a three-year subscription to live services is included. Heated seats, heated windscreen washer jets and headlight washers round off the impressive kit roster.

Another smart addition is an allergy filter to the dual-zone climate control, which will also become standard across all performance Golf ranges – GTI, GTD, GTE, R, and Alltrack.

The extra equipment would individually cost almost £2,000, but the price of the Golf Match Estate is just £100 more than the previous SE model. That brings the grand total to £22,045 starting price.

Other Volkswagen range updates

Volkswagen has also made several upgrades elsewhere in the range. For starters, the Golf R hatchback and estate are both now supplied with the Discover Navigation system as standard, along with heated front seats, headlight washers, and heated windscreen washer jets. This extra equipment equates to a £500 rise in the price, so the Golf R now begins from £31,685.

The Passat receives its own infotainment upgrade, and customers can now select the Active Info Display system (Volkswagen’s version of Audi’s virtual cockpit) regardless of which model they choose. In addition, there’s now the option of Nivomat self-levelling rear suspension available on most trim levels of Passat.

Elsewhere in the Passat range, the GT and R-Line trims benefit from the aforementioned Active Info Display and a panoramic glass roof as standard equipment – leaving a £1,265 saving over specifying these options individually, as the price of the cars rises by just £245.

The already extensive Polo range has been joined by a variety of Polo Beats special editions. These cars feature an upgraded, 300-watt sound system and extra styling details, and are available with a choice of four engines.

Finally, the latest upgrade is to the base diesel engine on the Volkswagen Touran. The engine has been upgraded from 108bhp to 113bhp, without affecting CO2 emissions or fuel economy. The popular engine is available on S, SE, and SE Family trim levels.
