Rugged Volvo V90 Cross Country on the way

Volvo V90 Cross Country spied 1

Our spies have snapped the new Volvo V90 Cross Country out on test, with a tougher look

The Volvo V90 range is set to expand with the introduction of the Cross Country variant. This model offers buyers a more rugged, four-wheel drive option to the range, and we've seen the car undergoing testing in Spain.

Most noticeable from the spy pictures is the raised ride height, which is likely to be up by around 65mm compared to the standard V90. The Cross Country will get four-wheel drive too, making it a much more capable off-roader than the standard car.

Tough-looking body cladding including front and rear skid plates will be fitted to the production version, but the heavy camouflage on this car has masked most of the changes - though the roof rails do looks larger than the existing set. New tyres made for tackling harsher surfaces could be fitted, too.

The four-wheel drive powertrains from the Volvo XC90 will be carried over into this model, as the cars use the same platform - meaning the higher-powered diesel engines as well as the T8 hybrid should make it into the V90 Cross Country.

In the XC90, the T8 uses a four-cylinder petrol and an electric motor to produce 395bhp, giving it a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds and fuel economy of 134.5mpg, both of which should be improved on in the smaller Cross Country.

Expect a new look for the interior too, with some new seats and materials likely for this more rugged version of the V90 estate.
