Peugeot’s SUV-styled new 3008 is aiming for the top, but can it beat the SEAT Ateca and Renault Kadjar?

Crossover sales are booming, so it comes as no shock that Peugeot is repositioning its 3008 into this lucrative sector. However, the arrival of this second-generation model coincides with the brand’s push upmarket, meaning the newcomer promises unrivalled levels of quality and technology. Yet Peugeot hasn’t forgotten the original’s five-seat MPV roots, because space and practicality remain cornerstones of the 3008’s strong showroom appeal.

Best crossovers on sale right now

Under the bonnet is a familiar line-up of 1.2 and 1.6-litre petrol engines, plus 1.6 and 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesels. The Active and Allure trim levels are carried over, while sporty GT-Line and GT models are the flagships.

While the 3008 is packed with on-paper promise, it’ll need to be very good indeed to see off SEAT’s Ateca and the Renault Kadjar though. The former takes the sharp styling and engaging driving dynamics of the Leon hatch and mixes in a dose of rugged kerb appeal and even more versatility; the latter sets the class standard for space, comfort and refinement. So which of our trio will be crowned the crossover king?

Head-to-head

Peugeot 3008

Model: Peugeot 3008 Allure 1.6 BlueHDi
Price: £25,445
Engine: 1.6-litre 4cyl turbodiesel, 118bhp
0-60mph: 10.8 seconds
Test economy: 44.1mpg/9.7mpl
CO2:  104g/km
Annual road tax: £20

With its second-generation 3008, Peugeot has pushed upmarket. Featuring a high-quality finish, lots of tech and the promise of class-leading refinement, the new car has its eyes on the crossover crown. There’s a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, plus four trim levels, so there should be something for every taste and budget. Here we test the 118bhp 1.6-litre BlueHDi in £25,445 Allure guise.

Testers' notes: The 3008 foregoes 4WD in favour of the Advanced Grip Control system, which mixes terrain modes with hill descent control and all-season tyres. Prices range from £260-£770.

SEAT Ateca

Model: SEAT Ateca 1.6 TDI SE Technology
Price: £23,890
Engine: 1.6-litre 4cyl turbodiesel, 113bhp
0-60mph: 10.4 seconds
Test economy: 45.7mpg/10.0mpl
CO2:  114g/km
Annual road tax: £30

The Ateca is SEAT’s first crossover, but it’s an excellent effort and won its first road test against the Renault Kadjar. Combining sharp looks, composed driving dynamics, decent practicality and low running costs, this rugged machine makes a fine alternative to a conventional family car. Here we test the 1.6-litre TDI for the first time, in £23,890 SE Technology guise.

Testers' notes: To match the Ateca’s high-riding looks to 4WD, you’ll have to trade up to the flagship 2.0 TDI. With 187bhp and a six-speed DSG box, the Xcellence 4Drive costs £29,990.

Renault Kadjar

Model: Renault Kadjar 1.5 dCi Signature Nav
Price: £24,845
Engine: 1.5-litre 4cyl turbodiesel, 108bhp
0-60mph: 11.7 seconds
Test economy: 47.6mpg/10.5mpl
CO2:  103g/km
Annual road tax: £20

The Renault Kadjar was beaten by the SEAT Ateca last time out, but with its mix of style, practicality, refinement and low running costs, it’s still a formidable rival. Here we test the efficient 1.5-litre dCi diesel in well equipped flagship £24,845 Signature Nav guise – although the car in our pictures is a Dynamique S Nav.

Testers' notes: Unlike the 3008, the Kadjar is available with four-wheel drive. The selectable system can only be ordered with the 128bhp 1.6 dCi, priced from £25,445 for the Dynamique Nav.

Verdict

First place: SEAT Ateca

Smart styling, a classy interior, composed driving dynamics and low running costs help the SEAT maintain its grip at the top of the crossover class. It feels like a more conventional package than the 3008, but it’s better executed and easier to live with. Yet it’s similarly packed with useful tech, plus it’s more comfortable and better to drive. The great-value price is merely the icing on the cake.

Second place: Peugeot 3008

In the final reckoning the Peugeot gets the nod over the Renault with its roomier, posher cabin and well integrated technology. It’s distinctive and well built inside, the i-Cockpit set-up is excellent and there’s lots of safety kit. Yet the car is undermined by its unrefined engine, inconsistent ride and high price. With a little fettling it would be a winner.

Third place: Renault Kadjar

Our former favourite is relegated to third place. Its cabin and infotainment system have already been overtaken by newer rivals’, while its 1.5-litre diesel trails on pace. Yet the Kadjar is handsome, comfortable, refined, roomy and well equipped. It’s also cheap to run for private and business users alike, plus it’s available with some very tempting finance deals.

Mazda CX-5

Mazda CX-5 LA Motor Show 2016 - front tracking

Due: July
Price: £23,500
Engine: 2.2-litre 4cyl, 148bhp

The all-new CX-5 aims to mix the original’s style and sharp driving dynamics with greater refinement, space and fuel efficiency. Engine line-up is carried over, which means the diesel is the same smooth and punchy 2.2-litre.
