Volvo is plotting a big push in the crossover market sector with two new small SUV models arriving in 2017. Alongside the debut of the next generation XC60, an all-new entry-level crossover called the XC40 is set to arrive and our spy photographers have provided our first grainy glimpse of the small SUV.
Taken from afar, the first batch of spy shots tell us little about the Volvo XC40’s design which is mostly obscured behind the large amounts of camouflage guarding the car’s production bodywork.
However, we’ve already been given a nudge in the right direction regarding how the XC40 will look. In May last year Volvo revealed its 40.1 and 40.2 concept cars, previewing the design language set to be taken on by its next generation small car line-up.
The 40.1 concept directly previews the upcoming XC40. It suggests a similar profile to the XC90 alongside new Volvo design mainstays like as the Thor’s Hammer headlights. However, it could also cut a unique character in Volvo’s SUV line-up, similar to how Audi has made its entry-level Q2 stand out compared to its bigger siblings.
The 40.1 concept suggests plenty of new angular edges and lines in store for the XC40 in sharp contrast to the smooth, rounded look employed by the XC90. A V40 hatchback and an S40 saloon will arrive too, creating a three strong ’40’ line-up.
The XC40 – alongside the two other new small Volvos – will sit on an all-new platform called Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), designed specifically for small cars. In terms of powertrains, Volvo has confirmed Twin Engine plug-in hybrid technology is on the cards for the new 40 cars and we expect a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol power unit to form the standard option, alongside a four-cylinder diesel.
The XC40 should debut later this year before going on sale in 2018. It could emerge as soon as April’s Shanghai Motor Show.
