Mercedes has hinted that another madcap version of its G-Class off-roader is on the way, following in the footsteps of the G 63 AMG 6x6 and the equally imposing G 500 AMG 4x4². A teaser picture has been doing the rounds on the German marque’s social media channels, giving clues towards a new G 65 4x4² cabriolet model with V12 power and a convertible roof.

The teaser image shows a portion of the new model’s rear end, sporting an eye-catching metallic teal paintjob. The flared wheel-arches with carbon-fibre edges, plus the 22-inch spare alloy wheel, would suggest this is another huge 4x4² model.
Alongside the spare wheel on the tailgate and the large, central brake light on stalks it’s possible to spy what looks like a tan coloured convertible roof folded neatly away. Compared to pictures of the original, short-wheelbase G-Class cabriolet, the roof looks like an almost identical setup.
There’s one last subtle takeaway from the teaser image – the licence plate reads G 65, so it’s likely that the new G-Class 4x4² convertible will get AMG’s 621bhp 6.0-litre V12 bi-turbo. In the standard G 65, it’s capable of hauling the G-Class from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds.

Mercedes says “stay tuned” for more information on the G 65 4x4² cabriolet over the coming weeks, but with the Geneva Motor Show exactly one month away it’s likely we’ll get a full reveal of the car there and then.
It might not be the only new 4x4² addition too, as our spy photographers have snapped what looks like a pick-up truck version of Merc’s huge off-roader undergoing testing.
