If you liked Alfa Romeo's dramatic but divisive 4C, you should (in theory) like this a fair bit more. The drop-top 4C Spider has just gone on sale in the UK, starting at £59,500. Numbers are extremely limited, so if you're after one you'll have to get your name on the shortlist quick.
It's a significant premium over the hardtop 4C, which starts at £45,000. It's £10,000 dearer than a 3.4-litre Porsche Boxster S, and £5,000 more than a Lotus Exige S Roadster. Of course it will probably be more exclusive than even the Lotus, but it's a significant sum by anyone's standards.
The Spider gets the same super-lightweight carbon fibre monocoque chassis as the hardtop, and only gains 10kg of weight due to added rollover protection. It's only available with a stowable canvas roof for now, but it's expected a carbon-fibre hard top will be optional soon.
Butresses now adorn the rear end of the Spider to differenciate it from the Coupe, while 2015 updates to both cars include a new xenon headlamp design, revised wheels and a carbon-fibre windscreen frame. Enhanced spec includes upgraded audio, parking sensors and cruise control.
Performance is unchanged over the standard 4C, with the 1.75-litre turbocharged four-pot propelling it from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 160mph.
