New Citroen C4 Cactus convertible could be the modern equivalent of the classic beach buggy

Spurred on by the excellent response to its C4 Cactus, Citroen is set to ratchet up the creativity with a wacky new convertible concept at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Citroen is calling its new show car a “fresh and energetic version” of the C4 Cactus, evoking “freedom, escape and well being”. Essentially it’s a more ‘outdoorsy’ C4 Cactus, and while Citroen has confirmed it will be debuting the newcomer at the show, it’s remaining tight-lipped about exactly how it could look.

Our exclusive images give an indication of how the car could revive the spirit of the beach buggy.

For this Cactus-based car, Citroen will look towards the 2CV-based Mehari. Built between 1968 and 1988, the Mehari focused on utilitarian style and allowed the 2CV to conquer more extreme roads. It was available in two and four-wheel drive with a canvas roof.

Citroen’s modern take on the car will use plastic doors, a clip-on canvas roof and have a pick-up-like loading area. It’ll likely be front-wheel drive and keep faithful to its C4 Cactus underpinnings. And should it reach production, it would use the Cactus’ 1.2-litre turbo petrol engines and 1.5-litre diesel. You can also be sure that Citroen would offer a bright colour palette with plenty of personalisation options.
