The new Skoda Roomster has been put on hold until next year. It was understood that the second generation of the quirky MPV was due to be unveiled later this year, probably at the low-profile Nitra Motor Show in Slovakia in October.
But an insider at Skoda has now told Auto Express that the model will remain under wraps until 2016.
The new Roomster marks a complete strategy change for Skoda, being based on the van-based Volkswagen Caddy MPV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
With sales relatively low across Europe, it wasn’t financially viable for Skoda to develop its own unique model. But the company was reluctant to lose the Roomster badge, so has done its own version of the Caddy.
The model is believed to be production ready – and Auto Express has already spied it testing – but with the VW only recently launched, Skoda will now wait until next year before a low-key unveil.
It will be sold in only a few key markets across Europe and won’t come to the UK.
Meanwhile, the company is set to expand the Superb range with two new models due to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
An eco GreenLine model will be joined by what’s been described to Auto Express as a ‘sporty-looking RS line’ Superb, although the enhancements will be purely visual.
