SEAT Leon Sport Cross previews 'X-Perience Cupra' model

SEAT Leon Sport Cross concept looks like a jacked-up, all-wheel drive Cupra, is likely to borrow powertrain from Golf R

SEAT has teased a new addition to the already fairly large Leon range. Not content with the standard hatch, the hot Cupra and the rugged X-Perience estate, the Sport Cross concept will preview a jacked-up hot three-door at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

Details of the concept are scarce for now, but the Spanish firm says it will blend "performance, dynamic design and crossover" elements from cars already in the range. The teaser image shows a car likely based on the existing Cupra, with styling elements borrowed from the X-Perience such as raised suspension, body cladding and skid plates.

Considering the styling intent and the brief, it's highly likely the Sport Cross will come with four-wheel drive, so it's possible the existing Cupra's 276bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol could be adapted. But we expect the more cost-effective option is to draft in the 296bhp powertrain and Haldex all-wheel drive system, which should see performance improve significantly.

We'll have further information on the Sport Cross concept, including whether or not SEAT plans to put it into production, when we head out to Frankfurt later in the week.
