2016-01-22 10:10

The Geneva Motor Show is always one of the most important events of the year for the car industry. You can bet there'll be plenty of new production car and concept car unveils, big breaking news stories and a veritable cyclone of rumours and speculation. For car fans, it's absolutely unmissable and Auto Express will be on the ground bringing you the best coverage.

The 2016 Geneva show runs from 3rd-13th March this year, but we'll be there early for the press preview days, bringing you all the biggest news on the 1st and 2nd March. Keep an eye on this page throughout, as we'll be keeping it updated with info on the cars that will be appearing at the show plus the latest reveals as they happen once everything kicks off on March 1st.

Geneva Motor Show 2015: last year's news round-up

Held every year at the Geneva Palexpo, the Geneva Motor Show thrives on its proximity to Europe’s biggest carmakers. All the top manufacturers will have a stand there, with AudiBMWMercedesVolkswagenSEATSkodaPeugeotCitroenRenault and Jaguar Land Rover all expecting to draw the crowds in with their latest models.

International car makers such as ToyotaHondaNissanKia, Ford and Hyundai will of course be there too - it's one of the most important events of the year afterall. While we have a very good idea of who's showing what before hand, there's usually one or two surprises too, as the big brands vie to steal bigger shares of the limelight.

Read on below to see what we expect to see at the show this year...

Geneva Motor Show 2016: manufacturer A to Z

Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo will most likely be bringing along a 4C Spider 50th Anniversary edition, which was teased recently. We could also see the non-QV version of the Giulia saloon, but as that has been pushed back we're more likely to see the brand's upcoming SUV. It's a crucial car for Alfa Romeo, and its success or failure will play a big part in determining the Italian marque's future.

Aston Martin

Aston Martin has already confirmed the DB11 name, but Geneva will be the first time we actually get to see the car in the metal. It will feature a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine, and CEO Andy Palmer tells us the car will change the perception that all Astons look alike.

Audi

Audi recently aquired the rights to use the Q2 name, and we expect to see it used on the brand's MQB-based small crossover, set to be revealed in Geneva. It will take on the Nissan Juke, and is based on the same platform as the VW Polo.

Bentley

Bentley could bring along a concept version of the Bentayga SUV with coupe-like styling and even more power to the Geneva Motor Show this year. According to a Bentley insider the car will be more agressively styled and performance-focused, but will still seat four in comfort.

Fiat

We've already seen the saloon version, but Fiat could be getting ready to reveal the Tipo hatchback destined for the UK market. The hatch will keep the handsome front-end styling we've already seen on the saloon, and we expect the interior to be very similar too.

Ford

Ford will have a Vignale focus at the Geneva show, with three new models set to get the brand's posh makeover. The Edge will be the most likely target, being an upmarket car to begin with, and we expect a Kuga Vignale as well.

Hyundai

Hyundai will debut the Ioniq, a rival for the Toyota Prius and the first car to be offered with fully electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options in the range. It's aerodynamic too, with a low drag coefficient, which means it will have more pure-electric range than the Nissan Leaf.

Jeep

Jeep is set to reveal a rival for the Nissan Qashqai at the show, most likely under the ressurected 'Compass' name. It will slot between the Renegade and Cherokee in the Jeep range, and if the Renegade is anything to go by it could be one of the best off-roaders in its class.

Lamborghini

Lamborghini is planning to celebrate its 100th birthday this year in style, with the reveal of a limited-run supercar at the Geneva show. We don't know much about it yet, but expect it to be a coupe in the style of Lambo's previous one-offs. That means mad styling and a mad powertrain to match, then.

Maserati

Maserati is continuing its charge into the mainstram following the Ghibli saloon with the Levante SUV. Despite being part of the FCA group, which includes Jeep, the company promises that this 4x4 will be 100 per cent Maserati.

Nissan

Nissan is planning what it says is the future of the petrol station - a wireless charging port for its range of electric cars like the Leaf. We'll hear more at the Geneva show, including a demonstration of how it works - and crucially how long it takes to charge.

Porsche

We already know that the updated Porsche Boxster and Cayman will be called 718, and we expect the brand will take the wraps off of the new designs at the show in March. Expect to see a range of flat-four turbo engines in an effort to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy.

Renault

With the Kadjar crossover and the next-gen Megane on sale, attention is turning to the all-new Scenic MPV. It’s set to launch at the show, and it will feature a much more stylish, dynamic design than the old model.

Skoda

Skoda has been hinting at a larger SUV than the Yeti for a while now, and 2016 could be the eyar where we'll see it. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it's possible that we'll see something new from the brand at Geneva this year.

Tesla

The Tesla Model 3 was confirmed in 2014, but we've seen nothing of the car yet. That will change in March, with the car looking likely to make an appearance at the show.

Vauxhall

Vauxhall will be revealing a new concept coupe called the GT at the Geneva show, with a production model to follow afterwards. There aren't many details on the concept car, but it will rival the Audi TT and feature a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines when it finds its way to the showroom floor.

Volvo

We've already been impressed by the new S90, and Volvo will be hoping the upcoming V90 estate does the same when it's revealed in Geneva. It'll get a similar front-end to the saloon, with a spacious tailgate on the back.
