Tesla removes 85kWh versions of Model S from range, as well as rear-wheel drive P90D

Tesla has removed the 85kWh versions of its Model S saloon from sale in a bid to simplify the range of models that are available. The rear-wheel drive 90kWh model has also been phased out in the UK.

That means the Model S range now consists of the 70kWh model in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive as well as the more powerful 90kWh model in standard or Performance (P90D) guise, both being all-wheel drive.

Tesla says that the 90kWh models have been well recieved by its customers, and that it offers range and performance close enough to the outgoing 85kWh version that the lower-powered unit is no longer needed.

The top-spec P90D has a range of 315 miles, but add the Ludicrous mode option and it will manage 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds thanks to a huge 967Nm of torque from 0rpm. The 90D model still manages the sprint in 4.2 seconds, but has a longer 340-mile range.

Go for the entry-level Model S 70D for an all-electric range of 275 miles, a top speed of 140mph and a 0-60mph time of 5.2 seconds. This model costs £57,335, with the range going up to £89,435 for the high-performance P90D.
