VW's city car also subject to minor facelift, too, but starts at same £8,945 price

A refreshed Volkswagen up! is on the way, with the new model set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2016. As well as a new look, the updated model also features a new turbo petrol engine.

The 1.0-litre TSI has 89bhp and 160Nm of torque, which means it can go from 0-62mph in 10 seconds and on to a top speed of 115mph. It still manages 64.2mpg, however, and that should mean CO2 emissions of around 102g/km. It joins the existing 59bhp and 74bhp 1.0-litre engines in the range, as well as the e-up! electric car. European markets also get a 67bhp eco up! model, but that most likely won't be available in the UK.

LED daytime running lights start off the exterior changes, with some new rear lights, door mirrors, a rear diffuser and redesigned bumpers contributing to the up!'s new look. The fog lamps get a cornering function too, and there are indicator lights inside the door mirrors.

Inside, the new up! gets new seats, extra colours for the dashboard, a multi-function steering wheel and a new air-conditioning system with an integrated air filter. Smartphone integration has been extended too, with the facelifted car getting some new functions for the infotainment system that are controlled via your phone. There's a new up! beats trim level as well, which gets a branded speaker system.

There are a handful of new customisation options for the new up! as well, including 13 colours, nine sticker designs, three roof colours and two interior colours. In top-spec models you can add coloured ambient lights inside the car, too.

Standard kit now includes LED lights and remote central locking, while move up! cars now get a USB port, a bigger 5-inch display and a new smartphone-enabled radio system. The high up! trim gets the ambient lights, heated seats, buttons on the steering wheel and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The new VW up! will be available in the summer, and although UK details haven't been confirmed we can expect it to start at the same £8,945 entry-level price as the current range, despite having more standard kit.
