The design of Citroen’s forthcoming C3 is likely to be strongly influenced by the brand’s quirky C4 Cactus – and will feature a development of the model’s innovative Airbumps.
We expect to see the Ford Fiesta rival at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, and it is believed to be a natural progression from the award-winning Cactus crossover, which has impressed buyers with its lightweight construction and trendy styling.
Xavier Peugeot, Citroen’s director of product planning, told Auto Express: “We need to bring some key elements of the new Citroen design, based on Cactus, for the next generation. “You need to tell a story to your customers. You need to send them signals which bring a kind of coherence.
“I am not saying we will keep all aspects of the Airbumps, but there are different ways of using such ingredients to create this coherence in the near future, and we have been working on it.”
Peugeot pointed to the recently launched e-Mehari electric buggy as an example of how Citroen’s design strategy is evolving, and it too is likely to donate design cues to the C3. “This shows there are ways to create coherence with Cactus without Airbumps,” he said.
The electric e-Mehari won’t be sold in the UK, but Peugeot said it was a good indicator of what Citroen was capable of in terms of all-electric powertrains.
When asked if we can expect more electric Citroens in future, he responded: “We have been working on that. You can’t try to pass on the message of a feel-good mindset and comfort without being connected to such advanced technical solutions which will bring a reduction of noise and more comfortable use.
“There will be at least one additional electric model within the Citroen range.” Meanwhile, confirmation that the brand will make a production model based on the Aircross SUV concept is expected soon.
