Nissan's next-gen Micra supermini has been spotted ahead of release at the end of the year

The new Nissan Micra is on the way, and this is the first time we've seen it out and about. The Ford Fiesta rival is set to debut towards the end of this year with a radical new look and more technology.

Nissan's current Micra is based on a platform that's now over 13 years old, so it's looking outdated next to virtually all of its supermini class challengers. The latest model - seen here plastered in what looks like gaffer tape - uses the all-new CMF-B small car platform architecture shared with Renault.

The exterior design borrows heavily from the Sway concept shown last year at Geneva, with a shapely profile and angular front-end, and Juke-inspired rear. The new Micra will be longer, lower and wider than ever as the sporty profile of this prototype shows.

That means extra interior space, both for passengers and in the boot. We expect most of the futuristic cabin design from the Sway to be used, too, with autonomous braking and more smartphone connectivity features.

Details of the engine range are unknown, however. We'll get the full story closer to the car's reveal, likely at a motor show in the second half of 2016.

What will the new Nissan Micra need to do to compete with the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo? Have your say in the comments below...
