The Toyota Prius Plug-in looks set to make its public debut at next week’s New York Motor Show, after the Japanese brand issued a teaser this morning.

A short Twitter statement accompanying a darkened tail-light shot of the car said, “We’re rolling out the next Prius mechanical marvel,” and pointed to the press day for the New York event, Wednesday 23 March.

The Prius plug-in is expected to feature a slightly different visual treatment from the regular hybrid version, and the teaser suggests that at least the rear lights will change between the two versions. The overall profile is likely to remain the same, though, since it is governed by aerodynamic efficiency.

The plug-in Prius will mix a larger battery with the latest hybrid’s electric motor set-up. Toyota has not issued any mechanical details but given the gains in the latest generation of the regular Prius over the old model, it’s reasonable to expect the plug-in to dip below 40g/km of CO2 emissions.

The Prius Plug-in’s reveal is a pretty early one; we don’t expect cars in UK showrooms until the end of this year. Prices should mirror those of the outgoing generation, with a starting figure of around £28,000.
