VW Golf TCR race car revealed with 325bhp, but all 20 are already sold out

Volkswagen has revealed a new racing version of its GTI Clubsport, the Golf GTI TCR. It was available to buy for private teams to take part in touring car championships around the world, with all 20 models now sold out.

It features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine just like the on in the road-going Golf R, but in this race spec it boasts 325bhp and 410Nm of torque, with power sent to the front wheels via a six-speed race gearbox. That means the GTI TCR goes from 0-62mph in around 5.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 143mph.

The chassis is about 400mm wider than the normal Golf, and with its 18-inch wheels, racing body kit and huge rear wing there's no doubting the car's purpose. The front splitter helps with aerodynamics on the track, too. Inside you'll find a racing seat and a race-ready roll cage.

Jost Capito, Volkswagen's motorsport director, said: "The Golf GTI TCR allows customer racing teams to partake in reasonably-priced motorsport with a Volkswagen. Furthermore, the teams can expand their motorsport commitments in numerous TCR championships, both at national and international level. We are providing them with a car that is ideally suited and prepared for this purpose"

The VW Golf GTI TCR will be delivered to teams in March, ahead of the first race it is eligible for: the Bahrain opener of the TCR Internation Series. The championship runs through the year until November with the final race in Macau.
