Mitsubishi has teased a brand new SUV concept that's set to take pride of place on its Paris Motor Show 2016 stand. The 'Ground Tourer' is described as the "latest expression" of the brand's design journey.
The info provided gives little detail about the concept, but the steeply raked windscreen and narrow glasshouse in the image hint at a Range Rover Evoque-inspired look. Meanwhile the front end is expected to share design cues with the XR PHEV II concept from the Geneva Motor Show in 2015.
It's possible that, as the three-door XR PHEV II is a supermini-sized SUV to rival the likes of the Renault Captur, the five-door Ground Tourer previews the eventual replacement of Mitsubishi's larger ASX. We'll have to wait until the official reveal to be sure, but we expect this car to morph into a Nissan Qashqai rival taking the place in the Mitsubishi range currently filled by the ASX.
Mitsubishi claims the Ground Tourer combines the brand's "unparalleled off road heritage and cutting edge plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology". Expect it to use an adaptation of the new front-wheel drive plug-in powertrain, combining a large electric motor and a petrol generator to produce super-low CO2 emissions. We'll bring you more information on the Ground Tourer concept as we have it.
