Skoda has introduced the 1.0-litre TSI engine to its Octavia range along with a series of other tweaks to update it for the 2017 model year.
As a replacement for the previous 1.2-litre four-cylinder version, Skoda’s compact new 1.0 TSI turbo petrol engine promises dynamic and efficiency improvements to Skoda's bestselling Octavia range.
With an output of 113bhp, and 200Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500rpm, the new TSI engine is available with a 7-speed DSG or a 6-speed manual gearbox. With this new engine installed, the Octavia can achieve a top speed of 126mph and cover the 0-62mph sprint in 9.9 seconds or 9.6 seconds in manual guise. If you go for the Estate versions they are 0.2s slower respectively.
The compact construction and aluminium crankcase mean that the three-cylinder engine weighs only 78kg, contributing to the 8 per cent decrease in fuel consumption compared to the old 1.2 TSI unit. In the hatchback, the 7-speed DSG reaches 62.8mpg, emitting 105g CO2/km, and this goes down to 104g/km with the manual gearbox.
As part of the 2017 updates to the Octavia, customers are offered the aero package option, which claims to further improve the Octavia's efficiency. The package includes a lowered sport chassis, active air flaps, a tailgate or roof spoiler and low rolling resistance tyres. This brings the fuel consumption down to 64.2mpg, with 102g/km CO2 emissions in both the hatchback and Estate with a manual gearbox.
On Octavia models with 148bhp or more, customers will now be offered the option of adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) on their Octavia. Skoda promises that DCC will offer a more varied driving experience, by allowing the driver to adapt the steering and suspension in Comfort, Normal or Sport mode. DCC controls the flow of oil within the shock absorbers depending on the mode selected, and automatically switches mode in hazardous situations, providing higher stability, better tyre grip and shorter braking distances.
Additional updates can be seen in the second generation infotainment system, which has new features and functionality for 2017. Also, the arrival of the optional Skoda Phonebox will now allow you to connect and charge your smartphone inductively.
