‘Hypercar’ is the term applied when ‘supercar’ doesn’t quite go far enough to describe the power, performance, out-there design, rarity and expense of the world’s most outrageously exotic cars.
As with supercars there aren’t really any hard and fast rules about what makes a hypercar, but you’ll probably know one when you see it. You won’t see one often, of course, as by their very nature hypercars are the preserve of the super-rich. Many of these super-exclusive vehicles also spend most of their lives stashed in secretive collections, although car-spotters can catch occasional glimpses at the glitzy hangouts of the rich and famous.
When making a hypercar you needn’t start with an uber-exclusive brand, but it probably helps. Porsche makes diesel SUVs for example, but its 918 Spyder has been one of the most talked about hypercars for years. Koenigsegg wasn’t even a brand until the early 1990s, when a certain Swedish entrepreneur decided the world needed a hypercar built his way. The same goes for Pagani.
Other names on the hypercar stage have been associated with ultimate exotica for decades. The Bugatti Veyron – and new Bugatti Chiron – follow in the footsteps of racing cars built for the road from early in the last century, while Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren between them have a vast heritage of motorsport and road car building.
There’s a long list of super-exotics that have won and lost the hypercar tag over the years, but scroll down for our ten favourite hypercars right now:
