Nissan has announced that its first vehicle to offer autonomous driving technology will be the Serena, due to go on sale in Japan in August. More significantly, its expected the autonomous drive technology will also be introduced on the updated Nissan Qashqai due to arrive next year.

Called ProPILOT, Nissan autonomous technology will assist with acceleration, braking and steering – Nissan says this will offer “convenience and peace of mind” to drivers. The system is controlled from a small camera equipped with image processing software, which can recognise vehicles and lane markers, as well as traffic activity.

The new technology is activated using a switch on the steering wheel. Once turned on, the distance between the vehicle and the vehicle ahead is controlled using a speed set by the driver. When necessary, the system will automatically apply the brakes and ultimately bring the vehicle to a complete halt. The system also keeps the car in the middle of the lane by reading lane markers and controlling steering, even through curves.

As well as bringing this technology to Europe next year, Nissan is planning to introduce the system to the U.S. and Chinese markets. Their multi-lane autonomous driving technology will enable automatic lane changes on roads and is planned for introduction in 2018 while autonomous driving on urban roads and in intersections is planned for launch in 2020.
