New Car Awards 2016: Technology Award - Hyundai

Hyundai wins the Auto Express 2016 Technology Award with their approach to alternative fuel research

This year’s Technology Award goes to Hyundai, thanks to its ambitious approach to alternative fuel research. With the launch of the new Ioniq family car later in 2016, Hyundai will offer a petrol/electric hybrid in its range for the first time. But the firm won’t be resting on its laurels with this Toyota Prius rival, as it attempts to provide customers with a variety of different energy systems for their cars.

That’s because the Ioniq’s platform is designed to accommodate different drive systems. And as well as the conventional hybrid, the firm has been working on a plug-in at the same time, as well as a fully electric version.

But that’s not the end of Hyundai’s ambition, as it has already demonstrated that it’s committed to a petrol-free future with its ix35 Hydrogen Fuel Cell model. This was the first fuel-cell vehicle to go on sale in the UK, and Hyundai has taken great pride in it, with demonstrations of its ability breaking a number of distance records and expanding the number of fleet sales as a result.

The company is even committed to expanding the network of hydrogen filling stations to keep it moving. Add these eco-friendly ambitions together, and you have a brand at the cutting edge of alternative energy vehicles.
