Mercedes-AMG to create hypercar with Formula 1 derived engine that could produce upwards of 1,000bhp

Mercedes-AMG will use its Formula 1 expertise to develop an all-new hypercar. Expected to be revealed next year, the hypercar will be built mark the 50th anniversary of AMG and is expected to be produced in very limited numbers.

According to our sister title EVO, a source within the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team confirmed that the car is nearing the final stages of design and will begin development testing imminently.

The F1 team also confirmed to EVO that the hypercar would be powered by a version of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine fitted to Mercdes-AMG’s current F1 cars. The capacity of the engine is likely to be increased as motorsport regulations won’t apply, while being coupled with an energy-recovery system could see power rise beyond 1,000bhp.

The powertrain could be made up of up to three electric motors; one for each of the front wheels with another bolted onto the rear axle.

Mercedes-AMG has a huge task in developing the F1 engine into a unit which can be used in a road car. A new gearbox, power supply and starter motor will all need to be developed for the car to undertake the most basic of day-to-day tasks.

Our illustration gives you some idea as to how the hypercar could look. Like the Aston Martin-Red Bull 001, aerodynamics will play a huge role in how the final product will look. An incredibly slippery design will allow the Mercedes-AMG to generate the huge amounts of downforce required in order to deliver the performance it will be capable of.
