Tesla may need to be on the lookout, as fellow Californian EV and technology start-up Faraday Future appears to be testing a new prototype. The mystery vehicle, with roof-mounted LIDAR sensors, was spotted leaving the brand’s headquarters.
Don’t be fooled by the bodywork of this prototype; it may look like a Lincoln MKZ, but the modified bodywork with LIDAR (laser-based radar detection) modules fixed to the roof and front bumper gives the game away. Spy photographers are adamant that this is Faraday Future finally testing autonomous driving tech in the real-world.
• Driverless cars: everything you need to know
Along with a number of firms including Google, Apple, Tesla and Ford, Faraday Future was granted permission to test driverless vehicles on California’s highways by the Californian Department of Motor Vehicles. The MKZ’s size means it is ideal for testing the driverless system, as well as its electric drivetrain.
Faraday Future has in the past vowed to give Tesla a run for its money with a range of electric cars based on a scalable modular platform. The company also revealed the bonkers 986bhp FFZERO1 concept – based on that scalable platform - at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. The first EV from the brand that will actually reach showrooms will be a Tesla Model S rival, although it’s not expected to debut for at least another year.
