Mitsubishi is readying its new challenger to the crossover class, and this is our clearest view of it yet. The replacement for the Mitsubishi ASX will gun for the Suzuki Vitara and Honda HR-V when it arrives early on in 2018.
Our snappers have caught the SUV on Michican plates testing alongside the larger Kia Sportage and Ford Escape (called the Kuga over here). It's expected to launch in the US first, as a result of Mitsubishi's greater popularity there compared to in Europe.
The front-end takes design inspiration from the Mitsubishi XR PHEV concept, although the looks have been toned down quite a bit, and the side profile is more in line with that of the current ASX. The rear is more heavily covered up, indicating there's a big design change back there. The dimensions of the ASX are expected to be boosted all-round compared to the old car.
Expect an updated range of downsized turbo petrol and diesel engines, while there will be also be a strong focus on plug-in hybrids; everything from straight petrol-electric models to range-extenders. Cabin quality should be given a boost, too, as should infotainment and safety tech.
