An all-new Kia Picanto is on the way very soon, with the city car set to make its debut in early 2017 and go on sale later in the year. Better still, our spy photographers have caught it undergoing winter testing.
The third generation promises to have more space than the current version, but will still offer a sporty look in contrast with its sister car, the Hyundai i10.
Our spy shots of the five-door model show a new wide-eyed face with LED headlamps, although most of the finer details are masked by the heavy disguise fitted to the prototype model. The overall proportions are largely the same as the outgoing car’s, but expect slight increases in length and width.
That should mean more passenger and boot space inside, while a redesigned dash and centre console will reduce the button count and keep it looking tidy. An interior spy shot also shows a few features of the new interior, with what look like some higher-quality materials being used around the cabin.
More upmarket-looking seats also feature on the new model, with a part-leather construction. That's likely to be reserved for top-spec models, though. A five-speed manual gearbox can be seen in this model but an automatic will also be available.
Power is likely to come from the same 65bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 85bhp 1.25-litre four-cylinder engines found in the latest i10, while low emissions and strong fuel economy will give the newcomer a fighting chance in the hard-fought city car class.
The new Kia Picanto is expected to cost from around £8,500 when it arrives in 2017, putting it in a competitive position against rivals such as the VW up!, Skoda Citigo, Hyundai i10 and even the upcoming Ford Ka+.
