Vauxhall is putting the finishing touches to the all-new Vauxhall Insignia, and now we’ve caught the more practical Insignia Sports Tourer model out in the open. The second-generation Insignia saloon is expected to launch first early in 2017, followed closely by the Sports Tourer which is likely to carry a £2,000 premium over the less practical 4-door.
As expected, changes to the Sports Tourer are only evident at the rear. The long sloping roofline appears to be lower than before, but the extended rear end could now hide one of the largest boots in its class. The new Insignia is set to grow considerably over the current version – by up to 150mm in length – which will dramatically increase space for luggage and passengers.
The current model is able to accommodate 540 litres of luggage but don’t be surprised if that figure rises beyond 600 litres - giving the Skoda Superb and VW Passat estates some added competition.
Like the saloon, the Sports Tourer will sit on an all-new global platform which is the reason for the significant increase in size. Despite this, the Insignia is also expected to shed around 200kg in weight thanks to the use of more lightweight materials such as aluminium.
Changes are expected to be less dramatic under the bonnet, with a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines offered to buyers. However, there is potential of Vauxhall introducing a new plug-in hybrid version of the Insignia. Both the Insignia saloon and Sports Tourer will abe sold as the Buick Regal in the US and China.
