Next year’s World Car of the Year nominees feature cars from all over the globe, with some of the car world’s newest and most exciting vehicles on the shortlist. Just like in previous years, European brands are well represented in 2017 – of the 23 cars shortlisted for the World Car of the Year title, eight are from Europe and of those, the Jaguar F-Pace flies the flag for the UK.
This year’s entrants include several of the most important new cars around. The new Audi Q5, for example – unveiled publicly at the recent 2016 Paris Motor Show. The new Honda Civic has already been on sale in the USA for quite some time, but it’s heading to Europe early next year – making it a true ‘World Car’.
The shortlist also includes a couple of Auto Express’ favourite cars – the aforementioned Jaguar F-Pace, the SEAT Ateca and the Fiat 124 Spider.
Britain’s other two entrants are in the luxury/performance category, where the Bentley Bentayga goes head to head with the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. It’s a talented class though, with rivals coming from seemingly everywhere. Sweden offers up the Volvo S90/V90, the USA the new Lincoln Continental, and even Korea with the Genesis G90.
The other two categories are World Green Car and World Urban Car. The former, perhaps predictably is populated almost entirely by alternatively fuelled vehicles and hybrids such as the Tesla Model X, Honda FCV Clarity and Chevrolet Bolt.
The shortlist for World Urban Car is a little more diverse, and features the new Ford Ka+, the Suzuki Baleno and Citroen C3 among its eight nominees.
