The Consumer Electronics Show is gradually becoming more and more of a fixture on the calendars of car fans as well as its usual technophile crowd. The reason is that the lines between the auto and consumer electronics industries is increasingly blurring as new technologies find their way into our vehicles.
Alongside all the new household gadgets and personal devices some of the world’s biggest carmakers are getting in on the CES action with new infotainment and connectivity technologies. Meanwhile, tech companies not traditionally associated with the motor industry are also beginning to dip their toes in the petrolhead pond as we move towards more electrified and self-driving cars arriving onto the market.
Last year saw the introduction of three big concept cars at CES – the Volkswagen Budd-e electric minivan, The BMW i8 iVision concept, plus the Faraday Future FFZERO1. We also saw connected car technology touted by marques like Audi, Toyota, Kia and Aston Martin, while Ford addressed mobility and autonomous technology at the show.
We’re expecting more of the same this year when CES 2017 kicks off on 5 January. Here’s what we know is coming, and we’ll be updating this page with new information as the show closes in.
CES 2017: all the key pre-show information
Faraday Future
Perhaps nothing will be bigger than this at CES 2017 – a year on from revealing its stunning FFZERO1 concept car, new electric car start-up Faraday Future promises to show off its production electric car for the first time. Spy shots have revealed the firm is developing a low, sleek looking electric SUV to rival the Tesla Model X. Autonomous technology could feature, but the Faraday we’ll see may not be the complete production model – teaser shots have revealed it uses cameras instead of wing mirrors, only legal in Japan presently.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
Nothing official is known about Fiat Chrysler’s presence at CES in January, but the corporation is on the bill and has confirmed it will hold a news conference. Some web reports speculate that FCA could reveal a self-driving minivan created in tandem with Google, after the two giants revealed a plan to collaborate earlier this year.
Honda NeuV

Another one of the show’s big concepts will be the Honda NeuV. From our first picture of the car we can see it is a small urban car created with autonomous commuting in mind. The NeuV will also feature a so-called ‘emotion engine’, and is penned as being part of a wider “Cooperative Mobility System” Honda will base its presence at the technology show around.
Hyundai
Hyundai is listed as an exhibitor at the show and the company says it will showcase its vision for future mobility, with insights into emission free, autonomous, connected mobility. At the recent LA Motor Show, the company revealed an autonomous version of its first electric production car – the Ioniq. Two will be on show at CES, with demonstrations taking place in Las Vegas.
Nissan
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn will front a keynote address at this year’s CES, and according to the show’s official website a “major technological breakthrough” related to zero emission, zero fatality motoring will be up for discussion.
Rinspeed Oasis
Another eye-catching concept car from Swiss car designers Rinspeed will be unveiled. The Oasis is a spacious looking self-driving urban pod that can turn on its own footprint, and has been designed with a huge 5K display dashboard, an augmented reality windscreen, and even its own garden plot. We’ll see it at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show too.
Toyota
Toyota is another manufacturer confirmed to be in attendance but with few clues as to what’s on the table. So far, the firm has only said it will present the findings of its latest research into artificial intelligence.
