Ford has announced the return of its Bronco badge on one of five new SUVs that will go on sale globally by 2020. The iconic Ford Bronco was on sale in the US from 1966 to 1996 and the new US-built model will go on sale in 2020.

Speaking at the Ford press conference at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, Joe Hinrichs Ford’s executive vice president and president for the Americas, said the new car would be, “A no-compromise midsize 4x4 utility for the thrill-seekers who want freedom and off-road functionality, with the space and versatility of an SUV.

“It's capable of conquering everything from your daily commute to gravel roads and boulders,"

Although no decision has been made on whether the car will come to the UK, Ford of Europe boss Jim Farley told Auto Express: “The new car will be a rugged, no-nonsense, mid-size SUV.”

However, the success of the Mustang in Europe (where it currently outsells the Porsche 911) and in the UK could help to sway things. And Auto Express has heard rumours that right-hand drive prototypes are already undergoing testing in Australia.

Farley also confirmed that substantial upgrades to Ford’s smallest SUV, the Ecosport, would arrive later in the year with production moving from India to Romania. “You’ll notice lots of changes to make it much more competitive, particularly on the inside,” Farley told us.
