These are the first images of Chinese automaker Lynk & Co's new 03 Concept - a sporty saloon making its debut at this week's Shanghai Motor Show.

Details are currently slim, but the model shares design details with the production 01 model, a compact crossover that will head Lynk & Co's assault in markets around the world.

The 01 sits on the Compact Modular Architecture platform co-developed with Volvo, so it's likely the 03 concept also uses this architecture. Volvo's upcoming XC40 crossover also sits on the new underpinnings, as well as expected S40 saloon and V40 hatchback models - so we're effectively looking at Lynk & Co's interpretation of the next Volvo S40.

The concept boasts strong proportions, with a chunky stance over large alloy wheels and low-profile tyres, and a distinctive sweeping roofline edged by an unbroken line of brightwork - not unlike that of the Kia Optima and Jaguar XJ.

At the front are a pair of high-mounted headlights - much like those of the 01 crossover - which sit above two horizontal air intakes. The rear lights appear to be intricately detailed LED units, while an integrated lip spoiler and a pair of exhausts in a diffuser-style element give the 03 an appropriately sporting look.

The cabin is a world away from most Chinese designs, with a unique design and an emphasis on technology - one aspect Lynk & Co will push heavily as it expands into global markets. Instruments are fully digital and there's a large central touchscreen for infotainment features.

At the 03's preview event in Shanghai, Lynk & Co executives also revealed the company's new, app-based car sharing feature, in which your smartphone is your car key - and allows you to share your car with friends via an app.

The company says its cars will be permanently connected Wifi hotspots, so you can connect to the car while out and about. In-car data will be free, for permanent connectivity.

In fact, the purchase process too will be entirely online, as part of a business model where all the car's features are standard and the car is sold at a fixed price, delivered to your door. Subscription models will also be available.

Full details on both the production 01 and the 03 concept will be revealed at the Lynk & Co press conference on Wednesday, April 19.
