Our first view of next year's updated MINI hatch shows minor design revisions, with tech and engine updates likely

Now MINI's range revolution is complete, with three all-new models in two years, it's time for the first round of mid-life facelifts. The MINI hatch will be the first to receive updates next year, and we've spotted a prototype for the first time.

Seen in convertible form, the three-door, five-door and cabriolet MINIs will all be tweaked for the model-year updates. Don't expect anything too radical, though - as the minimal camouflage of this test mule indicates, there will be subtle tweaks to the lights and bumpers front and rear.

A MINI spokesperson couldn't confirm any further revisions, but we can expect some of the new technology, materials and lifestyle options found in the latest Countryman to transfer over to its smaller sibling. The current car isn't exactly out-of-date in this regard, though, so minor updates are the order of the day.

We expect to see small power and efficiency improvements from the current range of three and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, too. It's possible that the John Cooper Works version will see power jump, too, as hot hatchbacks from all corners get quicker than ever.

The 2018 MINI won't be revealed to the world this year, though expect to see the first teasers early on in 2018 before a full launch in the second half of the year.
