Tesla's bold entry into the long-distance lorry market is revealed in a darkened teaser pic ahead of September reveal

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed the first image of the all-electric Tesla truck that he previously indicated would be shown in full this September. The HGV tractor unit looks set to launch the Tesla brand of EV innovation, that has had such an impact in the car world, into the commercial vehicle sphere.

Details of the Tesla truck are understandably scarce, though Musk does have a habit of letting things slip in interviews and on social media. We understand that the intention is for the Tesla truck to match the range and torque of a traditional diesel HGV tractor unit which, given what we know about electric car range compared to conventionally engined cars, seems ambitious.

The image shows a much curvier design than most HGVs of this size, presumably aimed at boosting aerodynamics. The conventional cab marker lighting remains, while bright L-shaped LED lights can also be seen. Musk has even described the truck as being "spry" to drive, although it's very unlikely we'll see fast 0-62mph times quoted.

The big Tesla model expansion is well under way; we'll soon have the Model 3, Model Y and a pick-up truck join the range, but this is the first venture into full commercial vehicle territory for the California-based carmaker. We'll see more details later this year.
