Kia will add a third model to its Niro line-up next year with the launch of a fully electric version, according to Kia’s European Chief Operating Officer Michael Cole.

The addition of the Niro EV will contribute to Kia’s (and sister brand Hyundai) aim to launch 31 electrified vehicles by 2020.

Speaking at the unveiling of Kia’s new Stonic SUV, Cole told Auto Express: “We have plans to introduce additional models. This year we’re already adding the plug-in hybrid Niro and we have the electric Niro next year.

“As we look at models in the future we will again look at solutions and what powertrains to put into those models.”

The Niro EV will adopt the powertrain from Hyundai’s Ioniq EV, which comprises a 28kWh Lithium-ion battery and electric motor which generates 119bhp and 295Nm of torque. In the Ioniq an electric range of 174 miles is claimed.

Cole went on to say that rather than develop more bespoke electrified vehicles like the Niro, Kia will instead focus on introducing alternative powertrains to its core model ranges.

No hybrid or electric version of the new Stonic is possible as the SUV is based on the same platform as the Rio supermini. Sister brand Hyundai, however, has confirmed an electric version the Kona is on the way as that model is based on a new electrified platform.
