BMW and MINI are offering drivers of older diesels the chance to trade in their cars for discounts of up to £1,700 off new models as part of an EU-wide scrappage scheme.

The "fleet renewal campaign" is aimed at drivers of cars that only meet Euro 4 emissions standards or below. This applies to the majority of diesel vehicles built before January 2005, and all BMW and MINI models are eligible.

The £1,700 discount can be added on top of other discounts - depending on the model purchased. The new, discounted vehicle must meet Euro 6 standards with CO2 emissions of 130g/km or lower, and can also be redeemed against electric cars like the i3, or any of the two brands’ plug-in hybrids.

Harald Krüger, BMW's Board Chairman, said: “For almost two years now, diesel technology which is cutting-edge, highly efficient and popular with customers has been deliberately and publicly discredited. This has caused tremendous uncertainty among millions of drivers and it’s not going to get us anywhere”.

In terms of particulate, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, BMW claims that modern diesels are now just as efficient, if not more efficient, than petrol vehicles. Addressing the controversial subject, BMW stated in its release that the issue had been "resolved” and that diesels “no longer have any adverse effect on air quality".
