Audi’s supercar could be about to get it’s first ever rear-wheel drive version if new teaser image sis anything to go by

Audi R8 teaser

Audi’s R8 has built its reputation on the stability and capability of its quattro all-wheel drive system but a new teaser video from Audi Sport suggests Frankfurt Motor Show might see a departure from that.

In the video released on the Audi Sport Facebook page we see a red and white liveried Audi R8 performing balletic pirouettes with accompanying smoke plumes and tyre marks to suggest a rear-wheel-drive powertrain.

The R8 has never been available in RWD form in the past but its sister car, the Lamborghini Huracan is available in rear-wheel drive and it looks as though the mid-engined R8 is set to make use of that technology to add some extra drama to its driving experience.

And drama won’t be in short supply with the new version of the R8 almost certain to get one of the two V10 powerplants currently available in the R8. The 5.2-litre unit makes 532bhp in the standard car or 602bhp in the R8 V10 Plus, the thought of all that going direct to the rear wheels will be more than enough to set enthusiast pulses racing.

We’ll know more about Audi’s plans and what this mysterious new R8 model is when the Frankfurt Motor Show gets underway on Tuesday.
