Volvo's newly separated standalone performance brand teases new Polestar coupe on Instagram ahead of reveal

After Volvo announced it would separate Polestar into a standalone brand last month, teaser images are being released onto social media for a new performance Polestar coupe. It's due to be revealed on 17 October.

Polestar Cars is using its Instagram account to reveal a series of images that barely reveal anything by themselves. However, the pictures are numbered as part of a large jigsaw puzzle, and our image (above) shows the puzzle pieces we have so far in place.

Evident in the images released so far is a low, sloping roofline, strongly suggesting that this is a two-door coupe. The rear lights appear to have been borrowed from the Volvo S90 saloon, tallying with rumours that Polestar's car will use Volvo's SPA modular platform underneath.

Details of the Polestar coupe's method of propulsion have yet to be revealed, but it's likely the performance brand will utilise a current Volvo powertrain. The T8 twin-engine hybrid found in the XC90 is the most likely candidate, and it's possible power would be boosted beyond the 395bhp offered in that unit.
