Polestar 1 production could double due to demand

First, flagship Polestar 1 model goes on sale next week for a €2,500 deposit

Polestar’s debut model, the hand-built plug-in Polestar 1, could have an extended run due to demand, the company’s COO has revealed.

Polestar was appearing at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as a standalone brand for the first time this year, where COO Jon Goodman told Auto Express that there were currently around 6,000 expressions of interest in the car, before a confirmed price has even been announced.

Initially Polestar was planning a limited run of only 1,500 of the cars, set to be built at the brand’s new facility in Chengdu, China. However, Goodman revealed that number could easily be doubled to meet demand from eager buyers.

All-electric Polestar 2 and 3 to take on Tesla

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told us that the company would start to take deposits of €2,500 from serious customers from the middle of March, although he refused to confirm pricing for the car yet. However, we expect prices to be higher than originally anticipated at around €150,000.

For that, customers will be getting a hand-built car featuring plenty of carbon fibre and powered by a plug-in hybrid system with a total of 592bhp and 1,000NM of torque. It’ll feature a claimed all-electric range of 93 miles from its battery, while its 338bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will take you even further.

And although the Polestar 1 will still be a limited run car, it is likely to be replaced according to Goodman. Once the company has established itself with its cheaper, all-electric 2 (saloon) and 3 (SUV) models, a new 1 could be on the cards. “We’ll always want a flagship,” Goodman told us.
