A facelifted version of the Renault Kadjar is due to reach showrooms in early 2019, but first we've spotted the family crossover undergoing testing in the wild.

The changes to the outside are set to be fairly subtle. The front bumper is new; the foglights move slightly upwards and the number plate has moved above the air intake, which is set to be reshaped to more closely match its bigger brother, the Koleos. The headlights and grille will be pretty much remain the same, but expect a little extra chrome trim on the latter.

The rear bumper will be subjected to minor tweaks too - the lower light units are new, for example. Elsewhere, the test car’s new wheel design and light blue body colour suggest a few extra alloys and paint finishes to choose from.

We’re yet to see the inside of the Kadjar, but it’s likely to feature some new trim designs and materials.

Under the skin, the Kadjar looks set to gain a new engine option. A 1.3 litre turbocharged petrol has been co-developed with Mercedes, which made its debut in the new A-Class. In that application it make 161bhp, though it may be offered in a different output in the Renault.

The A 180 d also uses an updated version of the 1.5-litre diesel that currently sees service in the Kadjar. There’s a modest 7bhp increase in power, but the changes improve fuel efficiency and reduce noise.

The Kadjar’s sales are currently flagging slightly - 111,000 European registrations in 2017 rank it seventh-best in the crossover sales charts, and 14 per cent down on its own numbers on the previous year. So among the changes, it’s possible that Renault will drop the starting price from the current car’s £19,790 mark.
