This is the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance, the new plug-in hybrid version of the German firm’s large SUV. Due in showrooms early next year the latest X5 hybrid is powered by a 3.0-litre, turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine - supported by an 82kW electric motor - for a combined power output of 394bhp. Maximum torque peaks at 600Nm.

Fuel economy is a claimed 134mpg and CO2 emissions stand at 50 g/km of CO2. The BMW X5 iPerformance can also cover a claimed 50 miles on electric power alone, travelling at speeds of up to 85mph.

In terms of performance 0-62mph is covered in 5.6 seconds, over a second quicker than the previous X5 hybrid. BMW states the top speed of the X5 xDrive45e is also improved over the predecessor, at 146mph.

Both the petrol engine and electric motor deliver their power via the X5 iPerformance’s eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system.

As standard, the X5 iPerformance is fitted with air suspension and electronically-controlled dampers. However, as an optional extra, buyers can spec uprated suspension with integral active steering. This allows the rear wheels to turn by a few degrees for extra agility at low speeds, and increased stability at higher speeds.

As the battery in the X5 hybrid is located low down in the floor, practicality isn’t dramatically affected; a 500-litre boot capacity increases to 1,716-litres when the rear seats are stowed.
