McLaren has announced its plans to build a new Grand Tourer at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. According to the British manufacturer’s CEO, Mike Flewitt, it will be lightest and fastest model in its class, with the best power-to-weight ratio.

Due to be revealed in a few months time, the new Grand Tourer will adopt the same mid-engined, rear-wheel drive layout as the rest of the company’s range. The British firm also confirmed that its GT car will “share its DNA with the 250mph McLaren Speedtail.” The extent or nature of the relationship is yet to be confirmed, however.

When quizzed about the McLaren GT project, Flewitt said: “it will be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful lightweight body. It’s a car that has been designed for distance and one that will also provide the comfort and space expected of a Grand Tourer. But with a level of agility never experienced before in this segment.”

McLaren has only provided one image of its new GT car for the time being, featuring a heavily-masked test-mule. The rear of the coupe apes the company’s old McLaren F1 supercar, with a slab-faced rear bumper and a sharply-tapering roofline. Seeing as it will share aspects of the Speedtail’s design, it’s possible that it could feature a hybrid powertrain.

According to McLaren, its new GT car be a unique model with a spacious, uncluttered interior, finished to the firm’s usual high standard. Flewitt also promised that, when it arrives, McLaren’s Grand Tourer will be the most usable mid-engined car built to date. Further information will be released over the coming months, and we’ll update you when it arrives.
