Porsche will soon be adding to the 911 range with new Turbo and Turbo S models set to up the performance ante beyond 600bhp

Porsche 911 Turbo S - side tracking - spies

As sure as spring follows winter, a new Porsche 911 Carrera will be followed in fairly short order by a 911 Turbo. The 992 Porsche 911 Turbo had been keeping a low profile but now spy shots have emerged showing the new supercar in Turbo S form and almost all its glory.

The images reveal a very nearly undisguised test car sporting the familiar 911 Turbo rear wheelarch intakes and wing as well as the square quad exhausts in place of the twin oval items that would usually denote a standard Turbo. Helpfully, there’s also an interior dashboard shot showing a similar digital layout to that of the 911 Carrera we’ve already driven but with the telltale ‘Turbo S’ legend in the centre of the central analogue rev counter.

Best sports cars to buy

There’s nothing official on the new Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S powertrain but the expectation is that drive will be sent to all four wheels from a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six. The standard Turbo is rumoured to come close to the 600bhp mark this time, a significant upgrade on the 552bhp of the 991 911 Turbo. That could see the Turbo S variant extend as high as 620bhp or more. Both models would use the Porsche PDK 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

The leap in power should mean a further shaving of the 0-62mph time of the Turbo S. The 2.9s officially quoted by Porsche for the previous generation car was always thought to be conservative with supercar regularly recorded achieving close to 2.6s in good conditions. The 992 iteration could go sub 2.5s with the right surface and temperature, while top speed should edge up from the 205mph of the old car.

We may not have to wait too long to find out full details for certain with the 911 Turbo set for reveal in the coming months. The Coupe versions like the car pictured are expected to arrive ahead of the Cabriolets by the time of the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020, if not before.
